Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration leading to increased bone fragility and fracture. It is a major global public health problem associated with significant morbidity, mortality and socioeconomic burden, affecting 200 million people worldwide.

Around 50 million people were affected by osteoporosis /osteopenia in India. Prevalence was 24% in men and 42% in women above 50 years of age.

Osteoporosis is usually considered a silent disease until a fracture occurs, where Bone Mineral Density (BMD) can be quantified using Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) which is a standard diagnostic technique for diagnosing Osteoporosis.

Risk factors for osteoporosis are prior fragility fracture, tobacco smoking, long term glucocorticoid usage; however fracture risk is strongly affected by ethnicity and gender.

Early diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis using widespread screening techniques is used to prevent debilitating fractures and its associated morbidity.”
